Energinet introduces background checks for all employees and selected suppliers
Threats against critical infrastructure have become increasingly serious. At the same time, people unfortunately remain one of the most effective entry points for those seeking to cause harm — whether through cyberattacks or physical sabotage.

As a result, Energinet is now introducing background checks for both new and existing employees. This initiative is in addition to the security clearances already required for many employees working in critical positions.
What is new is that background checks will now apply to all employees — as well as selected suppliers — and no longer only to specific roles.
The initiative is important because a single individual can, in practice, become the entry point for cyberattacks, espionage, or coercion targeting key personnel. This applies to all organizations, but especially to Energinet, which operates critical infrastructure, systems, data, and facilities and therefore carries significant responsibility for Denmark’s electricity and gas supply.
Background checks are one of several measures aimed at reducing risk and better protecting employees, facilities, and ultimately Denmark’s security of supply.
“Background checks are not about distrust in our employees, and we know they cannot prevent every incident. However, they represent due diligence and good preventive security practice. It is a necessary step to better protect Energinet’s employees as well as the systems, facilities, and activities we work with,”
says Jim Terndrup, Vice President of Security and Emergency Preparedness at Energinet.
The background checks include basic information such as passport details, driver’s license information, criminal record checks, and any extended stays abroad. The initiative follows recommendations from the relevant authorities.
